Why Is Your HP Laptop Slow?

HP laptops come preloaded with software that quietly runs in the background — HP Support Assistant, myHP, HP Audio Switch, and bundled antivirus trials are the most common offenders. On top of that, Windows Update, Defender scans, and SSD wear all compound over time. The good news: most HP laptop slowdowns are software-related and fixable without reinstalling Windows or buying new hardware. These 7 fixes are ordered by the speed improvement they typically deliver.

7 Fixes for a Slow HP Laptop

Fix 1: Remove HP Startup Bloatware

Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, go to the Startup tab, and sort by Startup impact. Disable HP Support Assistant, myHP, HP Audio Switch, and any bundled antivirus (McAfee or Norton) you're not actively using. These alone add 20–40 seconds to boot time on HP Pavilion, Envy, and Spectre models. You can re-enable any item if you need it later.

Fix 2: Kill the Real-Time Background Hog

In Task Manager, click the CPU column to sort by usage. On HP laptops, common background hogs are MsMpEng.exe (Windows Defender — you can schedule scans to run at night instead), HPNetworkCommunicatorCom.exe, and SvcHost.exe running Windows Update. If a process consistently uses more than 10% CPU at idle, that's your slowdown. End the task to test, then decide whether to disable it permanently.

Fix 3: Update Chipset and Storage Drivers from HP Directly

Generic Windows drivers don't always communicate correctly with HP hardware. Go to support.hp.com/drivers, enter your laptop's serial number (on the bottom sticker or in Settings > System > About), and download the latest Intel Chipset, Intel Management Engine, and Storage Controller drivers. Restart after installing. This fixes stuttering on HP Envy and HP Spectre models running Windows 11.

Fix 4: Run CrystalDiskInfo to Check SSD Health

A failing SSD causes slowdowns that no software fix will resolve. Download CrystalDiskInfo (free), run it, and look at the Health Status for your C: drive. "Good" is fine. "Caution" means replacement is coming — back up now. Also check Reallocated Sectors Count: any number above 0 is a warning. HP Pavilion 15 and HP 14 models shipped between 2019 and 2022 are most commonly affected by SSD degradation.

Fix 5: Switch to High Performance Power Mode

HP's default power plan throttles the CPU to save battery, even when the laptop is plugged in. On Windows 11: go to Settings > System > Power > Power mode and choose Best performance. On Windows 10: open Control Panel, search "power plan", and select High performance. This immediately improves responsiveness during web browsing, video calls, and document editing — no reboot needed.

Fix 6: Disable SysMain to Stop Constant Disk Activity

SysMain (formerly Superfetch) tries to pre-cache frequently used apps in RAM, but on HP laptops with nearly-full SSDs or HDDs, it causes constant disk thrashing that makes the laptop feel sluggish all the time. Press Win + R, type services.msc, scroll to SysMain, double-click it, set Startup type to Disabled, click Stop, then OK. Reboot and check if Task Manager shows lower disk usage.

Fix 7: Clean Temp Files and Free Up SSD Space

When an SSD falls below 10% free space, write speeds drop dramatically. Press Win + R, type %temp%, select all files, and delete them (skip any in use). Then run Disk Cleanup as Administrator — search "Disk Cleanup", select C:, click Clean up system files, check all boxes including Windows Update Cleanup. On HP laptops that haven't been cleaned in 6+ months, this can free 5–15 GB.
