Clean Up Disk Space Without Breaking Windows
TL;DR
Turn on Storage Sense to clear temp files and Recycle Bin on a schedule. Remove old Windows update files using Disk Cleanup - Clean up system files. Uninstall apps you do not use. Do not delete WinSxS, Program Files, or DriverStore by hand.
Why free space matters
Windows runs best when your system drive has at least 15 percent free space. Low space slows updates and can cause crashes during large installs.
Turn on Storage Sense
- Open Settings - System - Storage and turn on Storage Sense.
- Select Cleanup of temporary files and set how often to run.
- Choose when to empty Recycle Bin and Downloads.
Microsoft documents Storage Sense as the supported way to free space automatically.
Remove old Windows update files
Open Disk Cleanup, select your system drive, then choose Clean up system files. Check Windows Update Cleanup and Temporary Windows installation files.
Use OneDrive Files On-Demand
If you sync with OneDrive, mark large folders as Online-only so they still appear on your PC without taking local space.
Uninstall apps you do not use
Go to Settings - Apps - Installed apps, sort by size, and remove unused items. Check optional features and language packs too.
Avoid deleting these by hand
- C:\Windows\WinSxS and C:\Windows\System32
- C:\Program Files and C:\ProgramData
- C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore
- pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys unless you know the trade-offs
