Free Up Disk Space in Windows Safely
Running out of space on your computer can cause everything to slow down. Windows needs free space for updates, temporary files, and smooth operation. If your C drive is full, you may see warnings and failed updates. Luckily, there are several safe ways to free up disk space without risking important system files.
TL;DR
Use Storage Sense, Disk Cleanup, and OneDrive Files On-Demand to free space. Uninstall unused apps. Never delete System32, Program Files, or WinSxS manually.
Turn on Storage Sense
Go to Settings - System - Storage and enable Storage Sense. It can automatically remove temporary files, empty Recycle Bin, and delete old downloads on a schedule.
Run Disk Cleanup
Search for Disk Cleanup, open it, and select Clean up system files. Check Windows Update Cleanup and Temporary installation files. This can free many gigabytes safely.
Uninstall unused apps
Go to Settings - Apps - Installed apps and remove programs you do not use. Sort by size to find the biggest offenders. Also review optional features and language packs.
Use OneDrive Files On-Demand
If you use OneDrive, right click large folders and choose Free up space. The files remain in the cloud but no longer occupy disk space locally.
Avoid manual deletion
Do not delete System32, Program Files, or WinSxS folders manually. These contain critical system files. Always use built-in cleanup tools instead.
