How to Fix Windows 10 and 11 Black Screen Issues

If your screen stays black before or after login, use this safe checklist. No risky registry changes.

TL;DR

Try Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver, check cables and input source, press Win + P to switch display modes, then boot into Safe Mode to update or roll back the display driver. If the issue started after an update, uninstall that update from Safe Mode. Disable Fast Startup only if the problem repeats.

Black screen on Windows monitor

1. Quick checks

  • Make sure the PC is powered and the monitor is on. Increase brightness.
  • If you use an external monitor, re-seat the HDMI or DisplayPort cable and confirm the correct input on the monitor.
  • Tap the power button once to wake, then press any key. Try Ctrl + Alt + Del.

Microsoft lists these as first steps for blank screens.

2. Force the display and switch video output

  • Press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver. The screen should blink or you may hear a beep.
  • Press Win + P then use arrow keys to select Duplicate or Extend in case Windows is sending the signal to another display.

3. Enter Safe Mode

From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while you select Power - Restart. Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced options - Startup Settings - Restart, then press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

4. Update or roll back display drivers

Once in Safe Mode, open Device Manager - Display adapters. Right-click your GPU and choose Update driver. If the problem started after a driver update, open Properties - Driver - Roll Back Driver.

You can also download the latest driver directly from your GPU or laptop vendor.

5. Remove recent Windows updates

If the black screen started after a Windows update, open Settings - Windows Update - Update history - Uninstall updates and remove the most recent update. Reboot and test.

6. Turn off Fast Startup

Open Control Panel - Power Options - Choose what the power buttons do - Change settings that are currently unavailable, then clear Turn on fast startup. This can help when the GPU does not initialize correctly on resume.

7. When it points to hardware

  • No power light on the monitor or no signal message can indicate a bad cable, adapter, or port.
  • If the PC shows a manufacturer logo but never reaches sign-in, run Startup Repair from the Windows Recovery Environment.
  • Recent GPU driver crashes during gaming can point to a failing graphics card or power supply.

FAQ

What does Win + Ctrl + Shift + B actually do

It triggers a quick graphics driver reset. Windows should beep and briefly flash the screen.

Is this the same as Safe Mode

No. Safe Mode loads a minimal driver set. The graphics reset only tries to restart the display pipeline.

When should I reinstall Windows

If Safe Mode, driver rollback, and update removal do not help and the issue happens even with a clean user profile, a repair install can save time. Back up first.
